Insect Repellant

  • 2 tablespoons of witch hazel or vodka (probably best to use witch hazel for children)
  • 2 tablespoons of one or a combination of the following: grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil, or neem oil (which contains natural insecticidal properties)
  • 15 drops lavender (Lavandula angustifolia – “Lavender oil” does not have the same insecticidal qualities)
  • 15 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 15 drops citronella essential oil

Directions:

  1. Add carrier liquids to small spray bottle (3 or 4 oz. works well so there is room for shaking).
  2. Add essential oils.
  3. Shake well before each use.

Note:  Dark colored, glass bottles are best when using essential oils.

Essential Oil Recipes

Tea Tree

As a teenager tea tree oil was responsible for clearing up some very pesky acne that I could not get rid of even with prescription medication.  It has been shown to kill a number of bacteria including MRSA.

Lavender

The Lavender oil always comes out when there is an insect bite of any kind.  My kids can get a mosquito bite and I put lavender oil on it and they never itch from it again. Same goes for ant bites or scorpion stings.

Peppermint

Peppermint is so helpful when there is an upset tummy in the house.  It's one of the reasons antacids are peppermint flavored.

Lemon

Lemon is just refreshing no matter what you use it for.  In the diffuser it creates a blissful environment, a few drops in your water helps to cleanse, and if you have no lemons in winter for that lemon zest required in your favorite lemon cake recipe...doTerra has you covered with their Lemon essential oil.

Spray Hand Sanitizer

In a dark glass spray bottle combine the following:

  • Witch Hazel
  • Tea Tree Essential Oil (5-10 drops)
  • Lemon Essential Oil (5-10 drops)

Measurements will vary depending on the size of your bottle but the witch hazel will take the majority of the bottle.  Remember to leave room for air in the bottle (for shaking).

Other Essential Oils that may be used according to preference:

  • Lavender
  • Lemongrass
  • Orange
  • Peppermint
  • Cinnamon

I've been using essential oils for years.  For as long as I can remember actually.  When I was little, my mom started using essential oils and herbal remedies for pretty much anything.  In all my years of using essential oils, I've discovered that doTerra is one of only two companies that I can think of that offers essential oils for internal use.  A few oils that I have always had in my house and use for my whole family are Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, and Tea Tree (Melaleuca).

Sugar/ Salt Scrub

This is by far the easiest and most enjoyable recipe so far.

Directions:

In a glass jar place 1 cup sugar (or salt), then drizzle coconut oil into the granules while stirring.  You don't want the granules completely soaked or swimming in the oil. It's going to be slightly dryer than a paste.

Lastly, add 20 drops Lavender Essential Oil.

All of the ingredients are going to be according to preference.  Salt may be used instead of sugar.

Other Essential Oils that may be used:

Lemon, Wild Orange, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang
